  • Board-certified Psychiatric-mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Trained in health behavior from a public health perspective

There is no health without mental health. As a nurse practitioner, I bring a whole-person perspective to our mental health care team, as I consider how mental health affects a person’s physical health, and vice versa. I believe that the client is at the center of the team, and I am a coach on each one’s journey to mental health and wellness. I value working in an environment where our clients are already in therapy with some of the best counselors around and collaborating to identify whether medication might aid in their healing.

At Starkville Counseling Associates, I often treat common conditions like depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I enjoy working with people who are on a journey to overcome challenges like abuse or assault, or who struggle with substance use disorders. For those who are concerned about psychiatric medicines, I gladly spend time with them to better understand their hesitation; and together, we decide the best way forward, using the latest evidence-based guidance.

In addition to being a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (UMMC post-graduate certificate, 2021), I am also a family nurse practitioner (UAB MSN, 2011; DNP, 2014) and trained in health behavior from a public health perspective (UAB MPH, 2011). I have enjoyed working as a nurse on the bone marrow transplant unit at UAB Hospital, teaching undergraduate and graduate nursing students, and working as a nurse practitioner in an inter-professional diabetes management clinic for uninsured patients. My training and experience have given me the ability to approach situations more comprehensively as I layer on the family nurse practitioner lens or apply systems thinking from my public health training.

I have had my share of challenges and blessings, both of which give me valuable perspective as I come alongside my clients. One lesson I have learned is that it is okay to change your mind. If if you are not sure if medication could be a helpful part of your journey to mental health and wellness, let’s talk! My goal is that you will leave every visit with a plan of care that you endorse— because you helped create it.
