Resiliency is the ability to spring back from and successfully adapt to adversity. It can also be described as the positive capacity of people to cope with stress and catastrophe. I heard once about a study that looked for common characteristics among children who showed resiliency in their life despite many negative circumstances they faced. One of the most common characteristics was that someone had believed in them and shared that belief with them.
As a counselor, I seek to promote resiliency in the lives of my clients, and thus, much of what I do as a counselor, is to believe in my clients and share that belief with them. This is the foundation of all the work I do where I integrate my experience and training to help clients discover for themselves how to make improvements in their lives. A healthy person is healthy in every aspect of their life (emotionally, physically, relationally, and spiritually)—therefore, I work with my clients to help them find balance and well-being in all of these areas. Personally, I believe that I can only take clients as far as I have gone myself, so I work constantly in my own personal and spiritual growth both personally and professionally. I joined SCA in 2008 and am grateful to work with a team Counselors dedicated to personal and professional growth and help me along my journey.
I have a broad spectrum of experience that includes working with children, adolescents, and adults. I graduated with a master’s degree in counselor education with an emphasis in community counseling in 2003. Prior to beginning my private practice in 2005, my experience included crisis therapy with children and families in critical situations, counseling and advocating for students in schools with various needs across a broad spectrum from special education to gifted education, and alcohol and drug counseling. My current case load consists of a mix of individual, couples, and family counseling.
